Sing Sing Prison Museum is located in Ossining, New York. The goal of the museum is to educate visitors on the history of American prison systems and criminal justice within the past 200 years in an attempt to understand new ways to bring about a fairer future for incarcerated people across the country. The museum consists of exhibits, artifacts, and experiences demonstrating the realities of criminal punishment and rehabilitation that has played out in American society.
Sing Sing Correctional Facility coined many famous phrases such as “Up the River,” “The Big House,” and “The Last Mile.” I used these phrases and their references as inspiration during my logo sketching process. Eventually, I narrowed it down to three logos to choose from; the first one was inspired by cell blocks, the second one inspired by prisoners chains, and the third one was inspired by the old locks that are all on display at the museum. The cell block inspired logo ideas were then turned into a geometric typeface highlighting an isometric view which was used playfully throughout the rest of the branding.
